25 June 2007: Arrived in The Netherlands!

We have arrived in The Netherlands for our annual leave! Friday evening we departed to KLIA at 9pm by taxi, and at 12am we departed for The Netherlands.

The flight was quite ok. Half an hour before departure Emily started to cry (with quite a lot of noise) and we were barely able to calm her down. Fortunately after some milk and medicine for her cold she was quiet again. (There was one advantage: one of our neighbours apparently did not look forward to spending 12 hours on a plane sitting next to a little baby, so he decided to find another seat. That left us with one additional seat to use !) The rest of the flight she only woke up once for a feeding, and she slept the remainder of the flight (so we had the opportunity to rest as well...

Currently we stay near Utrecht with Jenny's brother and sister in law. We have already been able to visit some people: on Saturday Jennys family came by for diner (and to see Emily !), on Sunday we have visited a friend in Heeswijk-Dinther, and on Monday we had lunch in Rotterdam with a friend of Jenny.

5 juli 2007: Visit to The Netherlands

The past two weeks in our home country went very fast After a couple of days in Utrecht (the city I we live) with family and friends, we went to the Uithuizen on Saturday 30th of June to visit Henks parents and family. Obviously all of them were very erg excited to see Emily for the very first time in 'real life' (which is quite different then just on photo's or even a webcam !
During these days we also combined a few visits to family and friends with some shopping (in the city of Groningen). We especially bought clothes (that is: Jenny did ....), because the size of clothes in Malaysia doesn't quite match our sizes.... And obviously we have taken the opportunity to get some typical Dutch food to bring to Malaysia again: chocolate confetti (for sandwiches), treacle waffles, typical Dutch/Belgian Mayonaise en Cheese!
After our long weekend in 'Groningen', we finished our visit with a few days in Utrecht again and had a nice goodbye-dinner with the family of Jenny.

The flight back to Malaysia was a bit more difficult than the flight to Amsterdam: while driving to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, it turned out that there were some ad-hoc major roadworks around Amsterdam. This had caused major traffic jams on all roads around Amsterdam. Nevertheless we managed to get to Schiphol in time (or to be more precise: just in time ....) :
09:00 - Left Utrecht
09:30 - Stuck in a jam on the A2 highway near Maarssen. We decided to take a different route
09:50 - Via Woerden to Wilnis. Unfortunately also there a long jam all the way to Uithoorn

10:10 - At 'Amstelhoek' we decided to give Malaysian Airlines a call: check-in was possible until 11.15
10:50 - After Uithoorn the traffic was moving again
11:03 - Near 'Hoofddorp' we reached A4-highway and because of the delay we decided to drive 130 instead of the 90 that was allowed
11:08 - Arrived at the departure hall. Jenny quickly went to the check-in with the suitcases. Henk still had to return the rental car
11:25 - Check-in accomplished (just in time). We had to go to customs and the gate in a rush but made it to the plane.

Later it turned out that one of our suitcases had not made it to the plane in time, and was only delivered to us one day later. Obviously that was not a big thing, because at least we ourselves had made it !!

18 August 2007: Visitor

Last weekend one of Jennys sisters, Lien, has visited us. She currently works on a project basis with ABN AMRO in Singapore. Because Singapore celebrated Independance day on Thursday 9/8, it was a good time to pay a visit to KL. One of her collegues who was driving to Penang to see family was able to give her a ride. Friday evening we had dinner in the Revolving Restaurant in Menara KL. In the tower, at a height of 282 meter, the restaurant revolves 360 degrees in just over an hour. Having dinner and a nice view of KL city in lights is obviously a perfect combination. The dinner is a buffet diner, so we almost spent 4 hours eating and enjoying the view ....

3 September 2007: Holiday Phuket

Last weekend we (finally) went for a trip again: this time to Phuket in Thailand. Via the Air Asia website we have found a lovely hotel, where you have your own direct access to the pool. After a reasonably (easy) flight of slightly over an hour followed by a 1 hour car drive car we arrived the hotel on Thursday afternoon 5pm. The room and the service were super: they delivered immediately an extra cot for Emily and our room indeed did give direct access to the pool! Most of the time we enjoyed the lovely weather (sun and a nice temperature - 32 degrees; only on Sunday morning there was some rain) and the swimming pool. Emily also enjoyed swimming very much and couldn't get enough of splashing in the water.
On Friday and Saturday we went for sightseeing and shopping: a walk to Karon Beach (nearby our hotel) and with the cab we went to Patong Beach, about 10 minutes further on.

23 September 2007: Cameron Highlands

Last weekend we have been to Cameron Highlands: an area about 160 km north-east from KL. About 1,5 hour drive from KL to Ipoh to the North, and then you go up to 1400 meters above sea level to Cameron Highlands via a winding moutain road. Benefit of the height is obviously the temperature: 22 degrees during the daytime and it's cooling down until roughly 17 degrees at night. The area is famous because of fruit and vegetables: there are a lots of stalls along the road, where you can buy fresh vegetable and fruits: all kinds of cabbage, corn, carrots etc. etc. The area is also famous because of strawberries: the one place in Malaysia where these are cultivated.
