Baby update

26 November 2006: Baby

Dr. GunaMeanwhile everybody is already aware that since a number of months Jenny is pregnant. Her due date is end of April 2007. Like in the Netherlands, it's also common to go to a docter in Malaysia for a regular check-up. The health facilities are excellent in Malaysia: about 10 minutes drive from our house, there is "Damansara Specialist Hospital": een private clinic where a large number of good specialists have their practice. We have an indian doctor: dr. Gunasegaran. According to a number of people we have spoken one of the top-specialists (Gynacology) in the country. Obviously we can't tell yet, but at least his office is decorated with a large number of certificates and awards, so he must be good ......

Since October we have had two appointments at the hospital. The opening hours are not that bad: starting 7.30am it is possible to make an appointment. Jenny in waiting roomFor Henk that's quite convenient, because it's only 10 minutes to the office by car, so even if we go to the hospital in the morning, he is usually still able to be at the office in time.

Like everything in Malaysia, also the health system is much cheaper than the one we have in The Netherlands (obviously for Expats it's cheaper - a lot of local people cannot afford a private clinic and have to go to a public hospital). For our first appointment: an intake, echo, blood examination and a jar of vitamine pills we had to pay about 100 Euros. The second appointment with a amniocentesis is a bit more expensive: about 400 Euros. Obviously for those amounts you can't even talk to a specialist in our own Country !Take echo

The pregnancy so far has been quite ok for Jenny: hardly ever nauseous, only a bit tired every now and then and occasionaly no appetite.

Like in The Netherlands there are also maternity classes and other activities in Malaysia. Next week Jenny will visit IBU (Malay word for mother): a foundation that organises all sorts of activities for mothers (to be).

8 January 2007: Echo

This morning we have been to Damansara Specialist Hospital again for a monthly check-up. The baby is fine: growth is as expected, it moves every now and then and the result of the amniocentesis shows that there are no abnomalities. Jenny is also ok, so far not a lot of issues with the pregnancy: just a bit more tired than usual and obviously she has to go to the toilet a bit more often.
At the hospital we received a print of the echo where you can see the face of the baby (if you have proper eyesight and look carefully). For a larger version, click on the photo on the right.

This week I (Henk) won't be home: for Fortis this afternoon I fly to Hong Kong to work on an internal Fortis project. Saturday I will be back in KL !

4 March 2007: Maternity class

Jenny The maternity class has started in February. Damansara Specialist Hospital has a class of 4 weeks (starting every month) to educate new parents about a number of aspects of the pregnancy and the delivery. Some of the sessions they show videos or give presentations. The second session is practical: breathing excersises and other tips to stay calm during delivery. The third night we have a tour around the maternity ward: there are about 8 delivery rooms, and for the remainder of the time you have to stay at the hospital, there are a numer of different rooms available. Ranging from "four on 1 room " to a VIP-suite with separate room with TV, small kitchen and an a place to sit/sleep. We definitely have to check our Health Insurance contract to verify if that room is covered !

10 March 2007: Nursery

We have bought the first batch of things for the nursery the last couple of weeks:

  • Cabinet with a special platform to change the baby
  • Three-piece baby carriage:
    1. Buggy
    2. Car seat
    3. Maxi-Cosi
  • Child's bed. To be converted into a bed for children 'till age 4.
Obviously we have also bought a large number of baby clothes, baby bath, Verder uiteraard al een enorme berg babykleren, een bad + benodigdheden, rattle, baby bottles, etc etc. We think we have everything we need ......!

16 april 2007: Update

This morning we had our regular check-up at Damansara Specialist Hospital. Everything is still ok; the baby has gained a number of ounces and so does Jenny ... :-)
It looks like the baby has just started settling into the pelvis, so the docter thinks that labour is not very far now and the baby could be born somewhere this weekend. We will keep you posted .....

24 april 2007: Update

The baby is still not there yet. This morning we had our weekly check-up meeting: everything is still ok, and the docter thinks that it might still take 4-5 days before the baby is born.
That might be quite handy anyway, because this week on Thurday Henk will be on leave for about a week: on Thursday we have a Public Holiday, and next week Tuesday and Wednesday are Public Holidays as well. So those who take leave on Friday and Monday are 'free' for a whole week !

This afternoon, Jeny experienced some mild bleeding, so just to be on the safe side we paid a visit to the hospital. After lying on a heart monitor for half an hour (see the photo) we were able to go home again: nothing wrong! And we did not worry about the cost: for us it was only 6 Euro's in total.....

28 april 2007 01:11 (local time): Hospital

We have just delivered Jenny to Damansara Specialist Hospital. Around 11pm last night the water broken. According to the nurse in the hospital, it can however still take a while before the baby is born. Therefore it is not necessary to stay with her in the hospital all night.
Therefore we (Henk + mother Jenny) went home again and we'll visit the hospital again around 7am to check on the status.
